Kernsymptome sind Unaufmerksamkeit, Hyperaktivität und Impulsivität. Bei Erwachsenen sieht man das oft als Organisationsprobleme, Aufschieben, “Springen” zwischen Aufgaben; bei Kindern und Jugendlichen zusätzlich als innere Unruhe, motorische Zappeligkeit und impulsive Reaktionen. Wichtig ist: Symptome müssen dauerhaft auftreten und die Funktion (Studium, Arbeit, Beziehungen) beeinträchtigen.
